As consumers become more sophisticated online searchers, small businesses must focus on their advertising and marketing efforts online to remain successful. Local search continues to grow, as both buyers and sellers turn to the Internet to research and to shop.

Yet a recent survey from Nielsen Online and WebVisible, Inc. reveals that local businesses and consumers are too often failing to connect, despite billions of local consumer dollars up for grabs. A full 82% of consumers use search to find local businesses — yet less than half of all small businesses have a website. And only 9% of small businesses are satisfied with their online marketing efforts.

What’s a small business to do? SEO, SEM, PPC, keywords, Adwords, analytics — what does it all mean for you as a small business marketer when you’re just starting out with search? Where do you begin?
